Borderlands Game Of The Year Edition Is Out Now - GameSpot

Fans of the Borderlands series can rest easy, as developer Gearbox announced Borderlands 3 during its PAX East panel last week. Also during the panel, Gearbox confirmed the remaster of Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition. The release date for the remastered Borderlands: GotY is nearly here--here's exactly when it unlocks and how to get it for free on PC.

[Update: Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition is out now on PS4 and Xbox One. You can pick it up from the PS4 and Xbox One digital stores right now; if you're waiting for the PC version (free upgrade or otherwise), it'll be live later this afternoon, as noted below. Additionally, Gearbox has shared a bunch of new information about Borderlands 3, including confirmation of its release date: September 13. We also got the first details on its playable characters.]

The official Twitter account confirmed that Borderlands: GotY drops tomorrow, April 3. It'll be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET. Steam customers who own the existing Game of the Year Edition can download an update for free at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. It's possible to obtain physical copies of the game on consoles, but they're limited to US and Canada stores only.

When the Borderlands: GotY launched in October 2010, it gathered the original Borderlands with all four of its DLC packs--The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, and Claptrap's New Robot Revolution--into one package. This remastered version will do the exact same, but will also bring about some new additions like gameplay tweaks (such as a new minimap, for example), a series of new guns, new character customization options, and more. Gearbox is also altering the campaign's final boss, making it "more engaging, challenging, and rewarding."

Further, an Ultra HD texture pack for Borderlands: The Handsome Collection will be available the same day as the Borderlands: GotY drops. According to the official Borderlands website, the UHD texture pack will affect "characters, vehicles, weapons and environments." Gearbox didn't specify how the UHD texture pack will affect the game, so it's unclear if it's receiving more frames per second, higher graphical fidelity, or both.

Borderlands: GotY is currently not live on neither the PlayStation 4 nor Xbox Store. However, it's currently available for pre-order through GameStop for $30 on both platforms.

Apple starts advertising Powerbeats Pro ‘totally wireless’ headphones before release - 9to5Mac

After 9to5Mac exclusively revealed the look and design of Apple’s upcoming Powerbeats Pro fully wireless earphones last week, the new AirPods-like product has been spotted in a huge ad in Hollywood ahead of the official announcement.

As spotted by 9to5Mac reader, Jonathan Ducrest, Apple has put up a large vertical ad for the Powerbeats Pro fully wireless earphones in LA at the intersection of Sunset and Vine.

The ad shows a picture of the earbuds with the text “Totally Wireless” beneath the Powerbeats Pro name. In the full photo below, you can also see a second landscape ad for the product.

We’re told that one says “coming soon.”

Last week, 9to5Mac’s Gui Rambo uncovered images of the AirPods-like product including what the charging case will look like.

The new Powerbeats Pro will likely include the new H1 chip found in the second-generation AirPods and “Hey Siri” functionality. Notably, Powerbeats are a great option over AirPods for users who value the ear hook design for a more secure fit and they also offer multiple eartips with an in-ear design.

Pricing is still unknown at this point for the updated fully-wireless Powerbeats, but it could land near or above the $199 original retail price that Powerbeats 3 sold for (although they now go for just $99).

With the two ads now live for Powerbeats Pro in Hollywood, it may not be too long before we see an official announcement for the exciting new earphones.

Do you plan on picking up the Powerbeats Pro when then become available? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Thanks, Jonathan!

Google Assistant gets its long-promised John Legend voice - Engadget

Google

It took the better part of a year to show up, but John Legend's Google Assistant cameo is finally available in the US. Ask the AI helper to "talk like a Legend" and the singer's dulcet tones will greet you when issuing certain commands, such as asking about the weather. Naturally, he'll have answers for questions about his own life, such as his wife Chrissy Teigen or his favorite type of music (take a wild guess). Some of those answers will be canned, but others will take advantage of WaveNet speech synthesis to deliver a customized response.

Legend will only be available for a "limited time," and you'll have to be ready to hear the regular Google Assistant voice for those many queries where the crooner isn't available. It still beats hearing the same old dialogue for everything, though, and hints at a future where there's considerably more variety in voice assistants.

Google Assistant launches its first celebrity voice cameo with John Legend - The Verge

Google Assistant is launching its first celebrity voice cameo today, starting with the silky-smooth voice of John Legend. For a limited time, the Grammy-winning artist will sing “Happy Birthday” to you, tell you the weather, and answer questions like “Who is Chrissy Teigen?” right in your own home.

John Legend is one of six new Google Assistant voices that were previewed at Google I/O 2018 where the company gave a preview of its speech synthesis model WaveNet. Powered by Google’s DeepMind artificial intelligence, WaveNet works by sampling human speech and directly modeling audio waveforms from it, creating more realistic-sounding voices. “WaveNet allowed us to shorten the studio time, and the model can actually capture the richness of his voice,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said onstage.

Google had Legend record answers to a few select prompts, like “Hey, Google, serenade me” or “Hey, Google, are we just ordinary people?” There are a couple of Easter eggs in there as well, but most responses will continue to be in a regular Assistant voice.

To activate Legend’s voice, users can say, “Hey, Google, talk like a Legend” or go to Assistant voice in their Settings to switch to his voice. The feature is only available in English in the US, but this is likely just the beginning of Google adding more celebrity cameos in more regions.

Google Assistant can now talk like John Legend - TechCrunch

It’s pretty clear why Google opted not to announce this news on Monday, along with those new Gmail additions. When the company first mentioned at I/O that musician John Legend’s voice would be coming to Assistant, honestly, we weren’t sure if the company was joking.

Today, however, that feature becomes as reality — if you want it. If you say “Hey Google, talk like a Legend,” or go into Assistant’s setting, you can swap out your default voice for him. The singer went into the studio to record a select number of features, including answers to queries like:

  • “Are you John Legend?”
  • “What’s your favorite type of music?”
  • “Who is Chrissy Teigen?”
  • “Tell me a joke.”

Legend’s voice is only available for select content, including some “Easter eggs.” Other questions will be answered by the standard Assistant voice. Along with his recordings, Google utilized its WaveNet deep neural network technology to fine to Legend’s voice for Assistant.

Google says “cameo voices” are among Assistant’s most requested features. As such, I wouldn’t be too surprised to hear more from them in the near future.

WhatsApp now lets you control who can add you to groups - The Verge

WhatsApp is introducing new controls that let you limit who can add you to group messages. VentureBeat notes that the app now lets you stop people from adding you to groups if they’re not a contact in your address book. Alternatively, you can prevent anyone at all from being able to add you, or else leave the option open to all.

The feature is one part of a host of changes the service is making to try and stop misinformation from easily spreading. The BBC reported that ahead of Brazil’s elections last year political campaigners were using software to automatically add swaths of people to politically motivated WhatsApp groups without their consent. Time reports that similar practices are widespread in India.

WhatsApp has already limited the amount of times a message can be forwarded to five, and also now labels forwarded messages to draw attention to them. Yesterday, the service launched a new fact-checking service in India which users can use to verify the truthfulness of any messages they’ve been sent.

Users that restrict who can add them to groups can still be added by private invitation. They’ll receive a link, which gives basic information about the group they’ve been invited to, and can choose to join it if they want to. Otherwise the link expires in 72 hours. Previously a WhatsApp support page noted that the only way to prevent being added to a group was to block the group’s admin.

The new settings can be accessed by heading to Account options within the settings menu. Select Privacy, then Groups, and you’ll be able to select who exactly can add you to a group. This gives you three options, Nobody, My Contacts, or Everyone. WhatsApp’s new group controls are launching today, and will be rolling out to all users in the coming weeks.
